Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage: What’s the Difference?

Understanding your Medicare coverage is crucial to accessing the care you need. Here’s how the two types of Medicare differ:

Medicare (Original Medicare – Part A & Part B): This is the federal health insurance program for seniors and certain individuals with disabilities. If you have Medicare Part B, your in-home wound care services with Reneuvia are likely covered.

Medicare Advantage (Part C): This is a private insurance plan that replaces traditional Medicare. While these plans offer additional benefits, they often have different provider networks and coverage limitations. Unfortunately, Reneuvia’s services are not covered under Medicare Advantage plans.

How Reneuvia Helps You Heal

Not sure whether you have Medicare or Medicare Advantage? Follow these simple steps:

  1. Check Your Medicare Card – If your card says “Medicare” and lists Part A and/or Part B, you have Original Medicare. If it shows the name of a private insurance company, you likely have Medicare Advantage.
  2. Review Your Monthly Statements – Look at your Explanation of Benefits (EOB) or Summary Notice. If your plan lists a private insurer, it’s Medicare Advantage.
  3. Call Medicare Directly – You can confirm your coverage by calling 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
  4. Contact Your Insurance Provider – If you’re still unsure, reach out to your insurance company to ask whether you have traditional Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan.

How to Tell if You Have Original Medicare

If your Medicare card looks like this, congratulations! you are on traditional Medicare and we can help heal your diabetic wounds.

If your card looks different, it may be a Medicare Advantage Plan. Don’t worry! You can potentially switch back to traditional Medicare. Here are the times when you can switch from Medicare Advantage to traditional Medicare:

  • If the patient has been enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan for less than 12 months
  • If the patient feels information received when enrolling in current Medicare Advantage plan was misleading or incorrect.
  • 2025 Medicare Open Enrollment Period – Oct 15 – Dec 7 (Switch would take effect Jan 1, 2026)
  • 2026 Medicare General Enrollment Period – Jan 1 – March 31 (Effective date is 1st of the month following enrollment)
